Remembering past Easter celebrations
4/19/2025
Today, as I looked through my old journals, I found this reflection on Christ’s resurrection and our celebration of it. I don’t remember who Victoria and Justin were, but I do recall how God healed my dear friend who happened to be in the ICU that week.
The Greek words (with translations) at the top of my journal I have recited and believed since I was a very small child. I vividly remember each year going to the church late at night, clasping my candle tightly in my fist, and waiting in anticipation for the lights to go out. At midnight, the priest would come out with one lighted candle and before I blinked, the entire sanctuary was full of light. Together we would sing how Christ has risen from the dead, trampling death, and giving life to those in the tombs.
It has been over thirty years since I have celebrated in this way, especially since God allowed me to meet and marry a protestant pastor, but the message is still the same! Jesus died on a cross and three days later came back to life, forgiving our wrongs and giving us life and a relationship with God for eternity.
