With the help of the Lord, I am going to venture further into the realm of diversity, equity, and inclusion today, and how I communicate it’s value to children. These, unfortunately, have become “bad words” in our current political climate.
All people are created equal and in God’s image, but this country, like every other nation founded by fallen humans, has a history of treating certain groups the exact opposite. The United States is attempting to hide this truth, but ultimately our nation will be held accountable by the one who made all things.
I personally do not support or agree with minimizing the realities of horrendous acts, such as slavery, for example. And I am greatly troubled with how we are presently treating our immigrant community, including children (a five-year-old from Minnesota was recently taken to a detention center in Texas).
So, how is God calling me personally to act as a result? One way is by continuing to teach the truth to the children and families in my care. I am careful with how I communicate, as I don’t want to put images of violence in young children’s minds. I use children’s books, storytelling, and other methods to help them understand, as well as give them opportunities to reflect and respond.
As we explore native peoples from the northern most parts of North America, Lunar New Year and Chinese culture this winter – as well as parts of African American history – I pray that I am able to cultivate both appreciation and concern in my charges.
I encourage you to also ask God, first, to remove any blinders you might have in facing these issues. Afterwards, invite him to show you what part you have to play in standing up for righteousness.
Blessings, Zoe
